There have been some exciting developments in health education for students across Years 1-6 at the Wilson Campus. This allows classroom teachers to focus on core learning areas and creates space for a dedicated Health educator. In addition, further developing a consistent approach to Health education across the campus.

A Christ-Centred Perspective: Guiding Principles

Importantly, the lessons are presented from a Christ-centred perspective, acknowledging that we are all valued first and foremost because we are God’s creation – made in His image. The lessons are specifically developed to be age-appropriate in both presentation and information. 

Protective Behaviours: Empowering Students

Term 1 in Health is focused on Protective Behaviours, a crucial aspect of personal well-being. The core message is everyone has the right to feel safe at all times. This foundational belief underpins the entire curriculum, emphasising that safety is non-negotiable.

Key Topics Covered

  1. The Right to Feel Safe: Students explore the concept of safety as an inherent right. They learn that feeling secure is not a privilege but a fundamental need.
  2. Understanding Feelings: Emotional intelligence takes centre stage. Students delve into recognising and expressing their emotions effectively.
  3. Early Warning Signs: Recognising cues that signal potential danger becomes a critical skill. Students learn to listen to signals their body is giving them.
  4. Safety Continuum and Problem Solving: Problem-solving strategies empower them to address challenges confidently.
  5. We can talk with someone about anything and secrets: Students discover that they can talk to someone—be it a teacher, parent, or friend—about anything.
  6. Networks: Creating a network of trusted adults is essential. Students learn to identify reliable sources of support.
  7. Persistence and Advocacy: The message is clear: keep on telling. Students understand the importance of persistence in seeking help and advocating for their safety.
  8. Body Awareness: Students explore the concept that their bodies belong to them. Understanding boundaries and consent is crucial.
  9. Personal Space and Safe Touch: Respecting personal space and recognising safe touch are integral components of Protective Behaviours.
  10. Assertiveness: Students learn to assert their rights confidently and respectfully.

By empowering our students with Protective Behaviours, we equip them to navigate some of the complexities of the world while anchored in faith and compassion.
