As part of their study of the book of Acts, our Year 6 students explored how the Holy Spirit empowered believers to share the gospel and discovered how that mission continues around the world today. Through interviewing missionaries serving in a variety of roles and locations, students gained valuable insights into faith in action while developing their research, communication and presentation skills.
This term in Year 6, we have been studying the book of Acts and learning about the power of the Holy Spirit in the early Church. From Acts 1 to Acts 15, students explored how Jesus’ followers were called to be His witnesses “to the ends of the earth” and how the Holy Spirit gave ordinary people courage to share the gospel.
To connect this learning with real life, students completed a missionary news report project. They interviewed missionaries from local churches, the wider Christian community and their own families. Students then used the information they gathered to create a news report, practising their research, interviewing, writing and presentation skills in a meaningful way.
This project helped students see that the message of Acts continues today. They learnt that missionaries serve in many ways. Some preach and teach, some work in schools or language centres, some support churches through administration, prayer and fundraising, and others serve quietly behind the scenes.
Shaun and Jayce interviewed someone who serves in an administrative role in Delhi, India. They learnt that their work helps coordinate the behind-the-scenes support needed for mission work to continue.
Nathan and Shawn interviewed a missionary working in Papua New Guinea. Their work supports church leaders, he helps with church plants, he preaches in markets and villages, helps publishes a magazine and teaches at the local Bible College.
Jude and Will interviewed a missionary who serves in Thailand through Baptist Mission Australia. They learnt about the language centre that this person helped start, where people learn English and hear about God.
Arielle and Olivia interviewed Andrew, Olivia’s grandfather, who became a missionary after feeling called by God later in life. He shared about serving in Eswatini, Kenya and other countries, building churches, teaching pastors, sponsoring orphans and helping communities.
Arielle and Olivia learnt that mission work requires faith, sacrifice and reliance on the Holy Spirit!
It has been wonderful to see the students ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully and reflect on how God is working through His people around the world today.
