All games throughout the season were played in a positive spirit, as all were reminded before each game the importance of playing in a way that brings glory to God.
Interest levels hit new heights for season 2024 of the Primary House Football Competition, with a healthy participation rate of students from all houses and both campuses signing up. Once again, it was great to have Regent Christian College enter a team to add extra depth to the competition.
The season was made up of six games, allowing each team to play each other once. At the completion of the regular season, Tyndale sat on top of the ladder, with Wycliffe snapping at their heals in second place. Both teams were determined to bring their all in the Grand Final match the following week.
Interestingly, in game six of the regular season, Tyndale were able to get the better of Wycliffe, in what was a low scoring affair. This saw Tyndale faithful excited by the prospect of perhaps seeing their team win for a third time in a row to bring up the hat trick. Conversely, the Wycliffe team were determined to take what they had learnt from their recent defeat to Tyndale and turn things around to try and snatch victory out of the mouth of defeat.
From the first kick off in the Grand Final, it was clear that both teams had come to play. Wycliffe came bolting out of the gates to score an early goal, which helped fuel their endeavour. It wasn’t long before they had scored a second, putting the reigning champions on the backfoot. As the game progressed, there were scoring opportunities at both ends of the ground, with all players having to push and work hard to hold their own. As the final siren was blown, Wycliffe walked away with a commanding victory of 4-0 to win the crown they had been chasing. Congratulations to Wycliffe for an amazing Grand Final win!

Sportsmanship demonstrated in this way, especially as part of a competition, sets us apart from the modern notion of winning at all costs.
I would like to acknowledge all the students that were part of the competition this year, including the Year 10 Special Sport Soccer students that assisted with coaching. Special thanks to Diego RV and Mr de Bruyn for their willingness to referee throughout the competition. It is always great to see God glorified through sport and we look to next year’s competition.
