What’s for Dinner?

Friday afternoon art is always a highlight, where students crafted stunning collages and celebrated the joy of shared meals and cultural traditions.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our final art project for Term 1 in Year 4 Red, Wilson. Friday afternoon art is always a weekly highlight as students have opportunities to stretch their creative skills that God has blessed them with.

We began this project with the question:

When looking down, what would the light above your dining table see?

We brainstormed some of our favourite meals and foods, particularly meals we enjoy sharing with our families (which made us a bit hungry)! Through this process, we reflected on the way food is often an important part of culture and celebrations. Examples include the Passover in the Old Testament, Lunar New Year celebrations, birthdays, and Christmas lunches or dinners. Even in our own classroom, our families have many different dishes and traditions that reflect our culture.

As well as our food brainstorm, we investigated the collage techniques of some different artists such as Pete Cromer and Jeanie Baker, with a particular focus on Eric Carle. He painted paper in different colour and textures, then cut it out into shapes to form his collage. We used this technique for our meals.

We quickly realised that in order to make a good collage, you may need to make a mess! Our first lesson involved a lot of paint, and the next involved a lot of paper. Our room was full of the sound of cutting scissors and scraps of painted paper. Somehow, from this messy collection of tiny rectangles, circles and shapes, some fabulous collages emerged. Enjoy looking through our final results and see if you can spot some of your favourite meals!
