In Science this term, we are looking at the topic “The Sun is Fun!” Science is full of fantastic opportunities to ponder God’s creation, and marvel at the beautiful and clever design God has used throughout His entire universe.
We are exploring the fact that the sun gives us both light and heat. This has led us to discover thermometers. We experimented with hot and cold water and saw that the liquid inside the bulb goes up when it’s hot and down when it’s cold. We have also explored different areas around the school to measure the temperature. We found there is a big difference in temperature between standing in the shade of a tree or the verandah, compared to being out in the full sun. We have also been looking at light. The sun gives us light. So do torches, like little mini suns. This has led to us investigating shadows through making hand shadow puppets, and shining torches through different materials to find out whether they were transparent or opaque.
There are so many other things we have been investigating too: like the different clothing you wear depending on the temperature, and the need for shelter when the sun feels super hot. We have built cubbies and shelters out of blankets, boxes and umbrellas.
We are looking forward to next week, when we have some special visitors arrive with a certain type of animal that needs the sun to warm up their bodies so they can move, eat and stay strong…
