As the class has delved into exploring life cycles, I have had the privilege of introducing them all to their newest classmates… mealworms!
The students in Year 4 Red have been reflecting on the characteristics of living and non-living things. As the students have delved into exploring life cycles, I have had the privilege of introducing them all to their newest classmates… mealworms! My deep hope is for the students to understand the lifecycle of living things while encouraging them to identify the role that God has given them in caretaking the earth.
How do you feel about mealworms?
“They smell bad, but I like seeing them” – Feliz R
“I like them because I like watching them eat all the fruit scraps. I also like how they crawl on my hand.” – Shayden W
“We can see the different changes in the lifecycle.” – Zion A
“I feel a little bit disgusted, and I think it’s a little bit cool as well because of the way they change… and we can see the lifecycle.” – Lola M
Although not many were impressed with the appearance or the smell of our lovely mealworms, all the students agreed that it is wonderful to see how God has intentionally designed all things on earth.
As the students pondered on how to look after our mealworms, they were able to elaborate and discuss the ways they can be caretakers of the earth outside of our classroom.
How can we be caretakers of the earth outside of our classroom?
“We can pick up rubbish, take care of the plants and also the wetlands.” – Sapphira O
“We shouldn’t leave rubbish around because animals could eat it and also we should look after animals.” – Isabella G
“Maybe we shouldn’t kill insects. God created them to jump and fly.” – Zai Tha D
“We should clean up. If you see rubbish anywhere, you should pick it up. We should be more responsible by making sure we recycle and put our rubbish in the right bin.” – Evelyn C
