Last term, our Year One students from Wilson stepped into history during their “Play in the Past” incursion. What an exciting experience it was to journey back in time and discover how people lived in “the olden days!”
A special visitor joined us and brought along a collection of fascinating artefacts. The children had a fantastic time exploring rotary phones, cassette tapes, CDs, vintage kitchenware, and even some dress-up clothes from years gone by. These everyday items felt like special treasures to our curious learners!
Through play and hands-on discovery, the students engaged their imaginations while learning how life has changed over time. There was plenty of laughter as they compared these objects to the technology and conveniences we use today, realising just how quickly things have advanced. It was a joy to see the children make connections between the past and present and to ask thoughtful questions about what life might have been like for their grandparents and great-grandparents.
This experience also reminded us of the importance of remembering and learning from the past. Scripture often points us back to reflection and gratitude for those who came before us. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” As the children explored how life looked in another season of time, they began to see God’s hand in history and how each generation experiences its own blessings and challenges.
We also see in Deuteronomy 32:7 the encouragement to, “Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.” What a beautiful reminder that learning from those who came before us helps shape who we are today. Our incursion brought this verse to life as the students stepped into the stories of past generations and gained a deeper appreciation for the progress we now enjoy.
We are so thankful for opportunities like this that not only make learning fun and memorable but also connect our students to God’s greater story across time. History is not just about objects or events; it’s about people, and ultimately about God’s faithful hand guiding us through every age.
Our Year Ones left the incursion full of joy, wonder, and gratitude. We pray these experiences will inspire them to keep asking questions, honouring the past, and trusting God with the future.
