Something Beautiful

I look. I search. I hope to see.

Something that appeals to me.

Something unique – or maybe not.

Buttons, milk caps, straws – the lot.

A blue-green shape just caught my eye.

I don’t think I can pass it by.

Whatever it is, it makes me glad.

And so, I’ll put it in my bag!

– Rita Harris

Over the school break, the Kindy students searched for all kinds of bits and bobs to place inside brown paper bags. That’s because in term 3, we are wondering what makes something beautiful.

When the students hear the word ‘beautiful’ this is what comes to mind… Trees are beautiful, especially because the leaves change colours. Flowers, animals, shiny, sparkly things, smiles, rainbows, the sound of birds singing, and our families. It was agreed upon that smelly, stinky socks, and rubbish bins are not something beautiful. Did you know that the Bible says we are beautiful? God made us in His image, and therefore we are a beautiful masterpiece – God’s beautiful masterpiece.

The first thing we did was explore and describe Mrs Sherlock’s collection of beautiful things. Some objects had such beauty in their colour. Others were simply sparkly and shiny with pretty patterns on them. We were super intrigues that you could hear the beautiful ocean sound in the large shell too. Wow!

Next it was time to view the contents of our brown paper bags. We sorted them into two groups. Things we think are beautiful and things we think are not so beautiful. We picked one object and shared what we liked about it and then we placed our items aside ready to be created into something beautiful.

After sorting, we read a story called ‘Beautiful Oops’ by Barney Saltzberg. We realised that if there is a tear, a fold, a smudge or a little “oops” on our paper, we don’t need to throw it out because we can still make it into something beautiful.

Then we read “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis. Did you know that in Kindy, we have the most amazing imaginations because a box, is not a box! It can be a car, a train, a ship, a castle. It can be anything you’d like it to be. It was so much fun creating beautiful things with our “not a boxes”.

As you can see, Kindy is also something beautiful, and together we will continue to wonder and explore the many beautiful things God has made for us to enjoy. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reads – “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
