Rehoboth Students Gain Real-World Construction Experience Through Carport Build

Over the past 12 months, our Building & Construction students have transformed a vision into reality by designing and constructing a steel-framed carport at our Kenwick campus. From demolition and excavation to welding, roofing, and paving, the project provided valuable hands-on experience while creating a practical asset for the College.

Over the course of the last 12 months, students in the Building & Construction class designed, fabricated and constructed a steel-framed carport. The carport is located near the maintenance shed at Kenwick campus.

The work began with the demolition and removal of an existing shed, including breaking up and removing the old concrete slab and excavating a large tree stump from the construction area. The site was then measured and set out to ensure the carport location met access and safety requirements.

A steel framework was fabricated by measuring, cutting, and welding trusses and purlins. The completed trusses were installed into concrete footings, aligned using levelling equipment, and secured in place. Once the concrete had cured, purlins were attached to create the structural roof support system.

Roof sheeting was measured, cut, and installed, followed by the fitting of gutters and downpipes to provide effective drainage. Ground preparation was then completed using laser levelling, sand bedding, and compaction to create a stable base for paving. Pavers were cut, laid, and finished to a professional standard, resulting in a durable and functional surface beneath the carport.

The completed project provided practical experience in demolition, excavation, steel fabrication, welding, concreting, roofing, drainage installation, levelling, and paving. It also demonstrated the ability to work safely with industry-standard tools and equipment while collaborating effectively as part of a team to deliver a high-quality construction project for long-term school use.
