“Because when you create, you show the world what your Father is like – a God who creates to bring people delight.”
The quote above is a beautiful idea that comes from a book the Wilson Year 2 Blue class recently read. It has stayed with us as we’ve explored creativity across our learning. Creativity is a gift from God, and it reflects His nature. The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:27 that we are made in the image of God. Just as He created the heavens, the earth, and all that fills it, He has given us the ability to create too.
In Art, we’ve been inspired by God’s magnificent creation – from the stars above to the seas below. After studying Van Goh’s The Starry Night, we created our own swirling night skies using oil pastels and line techniques. As we layered colour and texture, we reflected on how God placed each star with care, calling them each by name.
Our learning about warm and cool colours came to life in sunset seascapes inspired by artist, Robin Mead. Using foreground, middle ground, and background, we captured God’s bright and beautiful world with watercolour paints.
Currently, we are exploring symmetry and the way balance and order can create beauty. Our self-portraits are underway, helping us appreciate the unique way God has made each of us, while developing skills to reflect that beauty thoughtfully and with care.
Creativity is blooming in other areas too. In English, we use words to craft stories, and in Science, we’ve been exploring sound – discovering how vibrations make music. Just as God spoke the world into existence, we too an create sound to bring joy and to praise God alongside all creation.
As Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Every creative moment is a chance to reflect our amazing and imaginative Creator.
