Book Week 2024 was a wonderful display of creativity and community in action. It was a time to connect, celebrate stories and come together as a community to spread the joy of reading!
Book Week is a time to connect, celebrate stories and come together as a community to spread the joy of reading! This year we had the theme ‘Reading is Wonder’ which launched us into pondering about books that make us wonder about adventures, the wonder of God’s amazing creation and a multitude of other endless possibilities! Celebrations of reading were found from Early Childhood classes celebrating with book-related outdoor provocations from rainbow fish sensory teas to tiger tea parties, making delicious gingerbread in Technology class to the library hosting a wonderful Book Sale! It was all happening, and the school was buzzing with excitement!
The main event of the week was the Book Week Dress Up Day which was held on 21 August. This is always a favourite time for many students and 2024 did not disappoint! The Biblical thread of Reflecting Creativity was evident everywhere – students praised God by reflecting their Creator in making expressive and inspiring things. The range of creativity from students and staff was amazing to behold from dragons whose wingspan meant they had to walk sideways to fit through doorways, to the clattering of the Saucepan man from The Faraway Tree, Christopher Robin, Sophie from BFG, and Dogman to Queen Elizabeth and Shakespeare, Queen Esther and King David, and even characters from books students had authored themselves!
The range of costumes was incredible, and students loved soaking it all in whilst trying to name all the characters. Staff also reflected God-given creativity and shout outs need to go to the fabulous Miss Trunchbull and the host of Where’s Wallys that seemed to pop up everywhere you looked! The library had a photobooth set up with wonderful additions that sparked students’ imaginations as they entered the space. A range of Book Week activities were set up in the library such as creating bottle bookmarks with pressed flowers, sequins and collage materials.
This year the challenge was set, “I wonder if we could host a book sale in the library during Book Week!” The funds from this would go to support the World Literacy Foundation and help to resource five school libraries giving access to over 2,500 directly to children in Uganda. The school community came together and donated a wonderful array of beautiful books for our stall, linking to the Biblical thread Activating Action. There was much anticipation from students in the lead up to the event. During Book Week students excitedly selected books to purchase for a gold coin donation. We raised $434 for the World Literacy Foundation! Thank you to the school community for your generous donations. The library was buzzing with excitement over what treasures could be found!
Here are some of the comments from students about Book Week:
Book Week 2024 was a wonderful display of creativity and community in action! Evident throughout the week was the way in which students became active contributors and encouragers of others building the community up (Biblical thread – Building Community). What a blessing it was to be part of Book Week this year and we look forward to more celebrations next year!
