This term, Kindy Red explored the wonderful ways living things grow and change, from seeds and flowers to the remarkable life cycle of a Monarch butterfly. Through hands-on investigations, imaginative play and moments of discovery, the children were reminded that while God’s creation changes and grows, God Himself remains faithful and unchanging.
This term in Kindy, we have been exploring the fascinating topic of growth and change. Through play, investigation, observation, and wonder, the children have been discovering the many ways living things grow and change over time. Alongside this learning, we have been holding onto an important big idea: although God created many things in the world to change, God Himself does not change.
Our learning began with us. The children reflected on how they have grown since they were babies, sharing stories, laughter, and proud moments as they recognised all they have learned and can now do. One of their favourite experiences was singing People Change by Colin Buchanan. Through this song, the children explored how people grow and change throughout their lives while reflecting on God’s unchanging nature.
Our curiosity then led us into the world of plants. The children became little scientists as they investigated seeds, wondering what might be hidden inside. They carefully examined seeds before planting their own and eagerly watched for signs of growth. As green shoots appeared, the children learned that growth takes time and that living things need care and patience to thrive. We explored the parts of flowers by carefully pulling them apart and examining each section to discover how they are designed. This learning inspired our very own pretend flower shop, where the children enjoyed creating bouquets, serving customers, and engaging in imaginative play.
Later in the term, we turned our attention to the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. The children’s interest was sparked when a tiny egg was discovered on a leaf. Questions quickly followed: ‘What could it be?’, ‘Is there something inside?’, and ‘What will it become?’
With great excitement, the children observed each stage of the butterfly’s life cycle. They learned that a Monarch caterpillar was growing inside the egg and watched as caterpillars ate, grew, and transformed before their eyes. The waiting continued as chrysalises formed and hung quietly, with daily checks to see if anything had changed. One particularly special moment came when a Monarch butterfly finally emerged. We later released this butterfly.
As we explored these changes, we continually returned to our big idea: although many things in creation grow and change, God remains constant and faithful through every season.
While much of our learning has focused on growth and change, there has also been plenty of time for the children to engage in the play experiences they love. Whether creating, building, imagining, or playing alongside friends, these moments have provided rich opportunities for learning, problem-solving, and building relationships.
It has been a joy to walk alongside the children as they discovered the wonder of growth, change, and the beauty of God’s unchanging world.
