Visiting the residents of Manoah House was such a joy!
Students in the Primary Choir at Kenwick had the privilege of visiting Manoah House, singing a selection of songs for the residents, and having some interesting conversations with them. It was such a joy to be able to serve the community in this way. Thank you to Manoah House for having us and thank you also to the awesome parent volunteers who assisted us on the day. Here are some reflections:
I enjoyed seeing smiles on the faces of the elderly, getting to talk to people, and making new friends. A gentleman sang a song for us. He was really good with the lyrics and tune.
One person at Manoah is 100 years old and his birthday is on the same birthday as mine. So, he is 90 years older than me!
Some of the residents were singing along and doing actions with us. It made us happy to see the audience joining in.
We served by singing and giving the residents pictures that we had drawn. I learnt that I had to speak up when I talked to the residents because it was hard for them to hear what we were saying.
Some of the residents remembered our names from our previous Deep Dive visit and they were really happy to see us again. We chatted about their pets and our favourite animals.
I managed to talk to one elderly lady and she asked me how old I was. She told me that when she was younger, she used to play in a playground and she built things with her friends. We also talked about our favourite food because I was a bit hungry at the time.
I met a lady who loved dancing and monkeys. Her husband turned 100 this year!
Jake had to introduce a song for our choir. When he finished introducing the song, an elderly lady said, "Thank you, Jake!" I found that funny and sweet.
We saw a lady in the audience singing the words for 'Java Jive' and 'Abide with Me'. She was telling the person next to her how she remembered these songs.
