Ivan Nagel (Year 8) is a keen triathelete and was recognised with WA Triathlete of the Year in May.

He competes in running, swimming, and cycling at a State level.

The Examiner Newspaper reported in February on Ivan’s preparations for his first National competition, although this was cancelled due to COVID-19.

To earn his Triathlete of the Year, Ivan had to compete in three Triathlon WA qualifying races. Each athlete earned points for their races based on their finishing position. At the end of the season, the points for each athlete’s best three races are added up to give an overall score.

Ivan received his award during a virtual presentation on 6 May.

Of his achievement, Ivan had this to say: ‘After the cancellation of the national competition due to COVID-19, I am very pleased to still have been recognised for my efforts during the season’. He went on to say that the achievement is further motivation to do his best, and proof that hard work can be recognised.

‘For me, it was very challenging to balance schoolwork and training. I had to put in extra effort on schoolwork during weekends. It also meant that we had to go to training at 5am some mornings’.

‘I would like to thank all my coaches and both my parents’.

Ivan’s mum and dad said, ‘We are very proud of Ivan and grateful to God for the talent He has blessed Ivan with. Ivan showed commitment and perseverance with a very stringent training program’.

Congratulations, Ivan! We are thrilled to see you putting in your best efforts.
