Growing in Language, Growing in Faith

Learning Mandarin is a joyful journey, where Year 1 to 6 students explore the richness of the Chinese language and culture, growing in their appreciation for God’s world.

At Rehoboth, learning Mandarin is more than just picking up new words – it’s a joyful journey of discovery, creativity, and gratitude for the gifts God has given us. From our youngest learners in Year 1 to our confident Year 6s, students are exploring the richness of the Chinese language and culture, all while growing in their appreciation for God’s world.

Our Year 1 students have been learning how to name family members in Mandarin. They’ve had fun labelling pictures of their own families at home, which has helped them connect what they’re learning in class to their daily lives. If you have a Year 1 at home, ask them how to say “mum,” “dad,” or “grandma” in Mandarin – they’d love to show you!

In Year 2, students are discovering the beautiful colours that God has painted into creation. They’ve been learning how to say different colours in Mandarin and spotting them around their classrooms. It’s been a colourful and joyful way to see God’s creativity reflected in both language and nature.

Year 3 students are diving into one of the most exciting traditional Chinese celebrations – the Dragon Boat Festival! They’ve learned about the special food, the customs, and the story behind the festival, and even had a chance to design their own dragon boats. It’s been a fun and engaging way to build cultural understanding and reflect on our Christian values.

In Year 4, students have taken on the challenge of learning to write Chinese characters. This is no easy task, but they’ve worked diligently to master the strokes and structure of each character. Mrs Ping is so proud of how carefully and beautifully they have written – it’s a wonderful reflection of the patience and perseverance God call us to have.

Year 5 students are learning how to describe the rooms and furniture in their homes. They’ve talked about the spaces they are blessed with and how to label them in Mandarin. They even created dream room designs and introduced them in Mandarin – a great way to combine language learning with imagination and thankfulness for what they have.

Finally, our Year 6 students are stepping into the digital world by practising how to type in Chinese. They are creating PowerPoint presentations in both Mandarin and English to introduce themselves – a big challenge that they’ve met with confidence and skill. Be sure to ask your child to show you their presentation, it’s something to be proud of!

We are so thankful to God for the opportunity to learn Mandarin here at Rehoboth. Through this learning, we are reminded of how vast and diverse His creation is, and we pray that He continues to bless our students as they use their language skills to serve others and bring glory to His Kingdom.
