May our artwork continue to reflect God’s beauty – one joyful brushstroke at a time!
When God created the world, He didn’t stop at black and white. No, He filled it with colour, light, and life! That’s the joyful message we explored together in our recent Year 2 art lesson, inspired by Genesis 1:1-5:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth didn’t have any shape. And it was empty. Darkness was over the surface of the ocean. At that time, the ocean covered the earth. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
We began by wondering aloud: What’s the difference between making and creating? As a class, we discovered that to create means to bring something into existence from nothing – just as God did. With only His word, He brought forth light, life, and beauty through the creation of land, sky, and sea!
Our learning focus was to understand that making art can be act of worship – a way of reflecting God’s creativity in our own unique way. We revisited the building blocks of art: lines, colours, shapes, and patterns. Drawing on what we’d learned in Term 1, we each designed a unique landscape using different types of lines.
Next, we explored the colour wheel and discussed the difference between warm and cool colours, finding examples of each in the world around us. We talked about how colours can affect our mood – how warm colours like red, orange, and yellow can feel joyful and energetic, while cool colours like blue and green can feel peaceful and calm.
Finally, it was time to paint! Using watercolours, we practised blending techniques to bring our landscapes to life. The results were simply beautiful – waves crashing in cool tones, skies glowing with sunset hues, and mountains touched by a mix of warm and cool shades.
This is a vibrant reminder that we, too, are part of God’s colourful creation. Next time you’re near Year 2 Red, pop in and come take a look at our beautiful designs – we’ve love to share them with you. May our artwork continue to reflect His beauty – one joyful brushstroke at a time!
