Exploring God’s Tiny Creations

Micro-organisms Banner

Micro-organisms play a vital role in our daily lives. These tiny creatures, designed by God, have amazing purposes!

In Year 6 Science, we’ve been exploring the wonderful world of micro-organisms and how they play a vital role in our daily lives. These tiny creatures, designed by God, have amazing purposes. From helping in food production to breaking down waste in nature, micro-organisms are a key part of God’s intricate creation. Our students were excited to dive deeper into this topic by conducting a hands-on investigation with one of the most well-known micro-organisms: yeast.

Yeast is an essential micro-organism used in making bread. We learned that yeast helps dough rise by producing carbon dioxide when it feeds on sugars. To investigate the best environment for yeast growth, we deigned an experiment that tested how water temperature affects the rising of dough. The students prepared three loaves of bread, each with dough made using different water temperatures: hot, lukewarm, and cold. We hypothesised that the dough with lukewarm water would rise the best, since it’s often said that yeast thrives in a warm environment.

Each student group carefully mixed and kneaded their doughs, ensuring all other factors, such as flour amount and yeast quantity, were identical. After letting the dough rest and rise, we placed the loaves in the oven to bake. The excitement grew as the delicious aroma of baking bread filled the classroom.

Once the bread was baked and cooled, it was time to evaluate the results. To our surprise, the loaves from each group turned out almost identical in size and texture, regardless of the water temperature used. Every student saw the same result: whether the water was hot, lukewarm, or cold, the dough rose and baked just as well. This unexpected conclusion led us to realise that while yeast may have preferred conditions, it can still perform its function of leavening bread under various circumstances.

This experiment not only deepened our understanding of micro-organisms but also reminded us that God’s creation is full of surprises. Whether it is yeast helping bread rise or bacteria breaking down waste, these tiny organisms are designed to carry out their roles in incredible ways. We look forward to continuing our studies and discovering more about how God’s handiwork impacts the world around us!
