We were inspired to think about the purpose of innovations and creativity, reflecting upon how they can be used for God’s glory and align with His will.
On 24 May, the Year 4 students and the Year 4/5 class travelled to the new Scribbler’s Festival and to the LEGO Relics exhibition. The excursion was a fantastic opportunity to hear from authors and loved the chance to be creative by developing their own drawling skills. The LEGO exhibition gave them the opportunity to appreciate the creativity of others and find ideas to improve their own LEGO builds in their projects at school.
Here is what some of the students had to say:
The first author we met was Christy Burne. Cristy Burne had the privilege to work with Fiona Wood (Fiona Wood is famous for inventing spray-on skin). When I first saw Cristy Burne I felt happy, excited and moved by what she had to say. She was a lovely woman. When she got on stage that day, she wasn't quiet, no she was loud and happy! She was not standing in one spot; no she was moving around and was so energetic. Cristy Burne did not just make everyone sit there, bored. She played a game with us and got the energy going in the room. Cristy Burne is a scientific writer, which means she writes about science, animals and she even wrote a book about Fiona Wood.

Cristy Burne was obsessed with science and had lots of stories to tell. Once she went to the biggest scientific structure in the world! Her energetic spirit brought me hope I can never forget. One day, she received a phone call. On the phone was someone who asked if she would like to write a book about Fiona Wood and she excitedly said 'Yes!'

The second person we met was Gavin Aung Than. Gavin was very friendly and fun. The name of the book series he writes is called 'Super Side Kicks.' Gavin did not just make us sit there bored, the thing he did was teach the class how to draw the characters. We learnt to draw Junior Justice who is the leader of the group. Then we learnt to draw Fly Girl who has little balls filled with insects in every book. Lastly, we did a little experiment. He chose a random girl from the crowd. The girl who got picked was named Zoey and the experiment was that he had to make her into a superhero. The superhero who he created was a girl who was really fast and had lightning power. He name was Super Zoey.

One of the authors we met was Gavin Aung Than. He is the illustrator and author of a series called 'Super Side Kicks.' It is a cartoon book recommended for ages around 8-12 years. He showed us how to draw some of the characters in the book. The characters were Goo; a gooey monster who he created because his daughter likes slime, Fly Girl who he thought would be a good Aussie superhero, Dinomite; a dinosaur and J.J.; Junior Justice. He showed our class the background of the book and then showed us how to draw. He said that first you should start with basic shapes like circles, triangles, squares and rectangles to draw the basic shape of the characters. Then you should draw the details of the body.

After Scribblers Festival, we went to the Relics Exhibition, where we saw some LEGO builds by the two men known as Alex and Jackson (the WA winners of LEGO Masters Series 2). "They were so awesome!" says the Year 4/5 class, "It was fascinating! How did they do that?!" There was a car, a fridge, a movie, a piano, a glow-in-the-dark room and a trash bag center! Everybody loved it. They all agreed that it was an awesome excursion and that no one would dislike one bit of it!
