On Friday 14 October, the Year 3 classes from the Wilson and Kenwick campuses went to the Earth Day Expo at Canning River Eco Education Centre. Earth Day is celebrated by more than 200 countries around the world. More than 10 schools around Perth attended this event. It was a day that reminded us that we are stewards of God’s world and need to take responsibility for what we use and how we use it. It was a day to think of the environmental challenges we face and how we might solve them.
Here are some of the things that we learned from Earth Day:
'I learnt that there are three kinds of pipes under our houses which are: clean water, wastewater and storm water. After we have gone to the toilet, some of the waste will be sent to the Water Corporation where they clean it up and put it back in the pipes to our house.'

'I learnt about different materials that are litter. They can be toxic and leave animals sick or dead. Plastic can get stuck onto dolphins. I also learnt that in chip packets the silver on the inside is not foil, but paint.'
Joseph L
'During bird watching, I learnt that a male magpie has black on its back and a female magpie has white on its back.'

'I learnt lots of things at Earth Day and my favourite was about soil. The soil is actually made from animal waste. We learnt the saying, "It's not dirty, it's earthy!" and we learnt how to make seed bombs. Seed bombs are a mixture of soil, clay, sand, water and some seeds. Gardeners make seed bombs and throw them into places that humans can't go to or are blocked off. After they throw it, the water breaks it apart causing the seeds to grow into flowers.'
Lucas F
'I really liked when we learnt about frogs because I never knew there were so many types of frogs! In our part of Australia, there are 32 types of frogs and 16 of them live in the Perth area. There's the motorbike frog, jumping frog, sand frog and lots more.'
