Dokimos Road: Big Day Out

The Year 9 cohort kicked off their Dokimos Road journey with an action‑packed Big Day Out across Fremantle and Woodman’s Point. From historical exploration to physical challenges and meaningful reflection, the day set the tone for a year of growth, resilience, and community.

What do Moondyne Joe, a windy beach, and an abseiling carabiner have in common? All three were part of the Year 9 Dokimos Road Big Day Out, an exciting launch to the programme that combines challenge, character formation, and adventure.

On Monday 16 February, our intrepid Year 9 students began the day with a visit to Fremantle Prison (don’t worry, no one was left behind). After touring the historic site, the group made their way to Esplanade Park for the famous “carrot + everything else wrap” for lunch, though perhaps Mrs Dalais was a little too generous with the carrot this year!

The afternoon took students to Woodman’s Point, where they practiced surf lifesaving skills, ran beach races, and later headed into the Cube for a series of vertical rope challenges. Many conquered the 15‑metre wall, cargo nets, and obstacles to ring the bell at the top, while others showed patience and teamwork by belaying for friends on the ground, a perfect picture of the supportive community we hope to foster.

As the sun set, students walked up the beach to meet their families for our traditional Calling ceremony. This special moment invited each student to consider what it means to step toward Christian adulthood within their families and community, a central part of the Dokimos Road journey.

Despite the wind and shifting plans, the evening finished peacefully with families sharing dinner together in the calm of Woodman’s Point Park. We’re grateful to all parents for their flexibility and support, and we look forward to an incredible year as our Year 9 students explore, grow, and engage deeply with the challenges and opportunities of Dokimos Road.
