This term, Year 5 students are diving into the big ideas of Democracy and Laws, exploring what fairness really looks like in our community and classroom. Their excursion to the Constitutional Centre brought these concepts to life as they stepped into the shoes of real decision‑makers.
Politics and fairness may not always seem to walk hand in hand, but this term our Year 5 students are exploring how these ideas shape our lives through the theme of Democracy and Laws. Central to their learning is the concept of fairness, the belief that we are all equal under the law, and what this looks like in a truly democratic classroom.
As part of this learning journey, our students recently enjoyed an excursion to the Constitutional Centre (despite not being given the chance to vote on attending… very democratic, right?). The day began with a deep dive into how decisions are made, who gets to make them, and the ideals of fairness that underpin our democratic system. Students gathered around the giant display screens, engaging with stories, examples, and lively discussions, sprinkled with a few restless wiggles in those familiar red classroom chairs.
Between sessions, the class took a well-earned breather in the sunny courtyard. Small groups settled under shady trees and along verandas, chatting, snacking, and comparing lunches with the seriousness of seasoned politicians. Some squeezed in quick ball games (until outvoted by one adult), while others leaned into strategic card matches with remarkable focus.
Refreshed and refuelled, the students stepped into the official mock Parliament Chamber, where the energy in the room shifted instantly, or at least as much as it can when filled with enthusiastic Year 5s.
They took on full parliamentary roles: Speaker, Clerks, government members, opposition representatives, and more. Scripts in hand, they debated issues, presented proposals, raised points, and conducted votes with impressive engagement and confidence. The Speaker’s Chair was a clear crowd favourite, offering whoever sat in it a sudden surge of authority, and more than a few satisfied smiles. The chamber buzzed with clear voices, lively debate, and bold presentations. It was democracy in action, Year 5 style: curious, energetic, and wonderfully authentic.
