Chinese Cultural Experiences Enrich Mandarin Learning at Rehoboth

Rehoboth students recently immersed themselves in a series of Chinese language and cultural experiences, gaining firsthand insight into traditions that have shaped Chinese society for centuries. Through calligraphy, music, language, and cuisine, students deepened their intercultural understanding while appreciating the richness and diversity of God’s world.

Last term, On 11 June, Year 7 Mandarin students participated in a Chinese Cultural Incursion focused on the art of Chinese calligraphy. Through this enriching experience, students learned about the history and cultural significance of calligraphy, explored the traditional tools used by calligraphers, and discovered how Chinese characters have changed over time. Throughout the session, students demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, perseverance, and concentration as they developed their brushwork skills and deepened their appreciation of Chinese culture.

On 16 June, Year 8 to 10 Mandarin students participated in a Chinese Cultural Incursion focused on the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. Students learned about the history and cultural significance of the Guzheng, enjoyed live performances, and had the opportunity to play mini Guzhengs and learn simple songs alongside the presenter. The hands-on experience helped students develop a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture while demonstrating enthusiasm, engagement, perseverance, and concentration throughout the session.

On 5 August, our Year 9 and Year 10 Mandarin students participated in the 2026 High School Chinese Language and Cultural Excursion, exploring Chinese language, culture, and cuisine through a range of engaging, hands-on experiences.

Students learned about the history and cultural significance of the Lion Dance and enjoyed the opportunity to try operating the lion head and tail, as well as playing traditional drums and gongs. They also practised their Mandarin skills in authentic settings, including interacting with staff at a Chinese supermarket and bubble tea shop.

A highlight of the day was sharing a traditional Yum Cha lunch, where students experienced authentic Chinese cuisine and gained insight into Chinese dining customs. Throughout the excursion, students demonstrated enthusiasm, engagement, perseverance, and respect, representing our school exceptionally well.

We are grateful for opportunities like these that help students develop intercultural understanding and appreciate the diversity and richness of God’s world and the many cultures He has created.
