This was a wonderfully engaging experience that provided students with an opportunity to solve real world mathematical problems within a fun and positive environment.
On Monday 19 August, the Year 3 to 6 students had the exciting opportunity to explore Mathematics through an interactive and hands-on approach with the ‘World of Maths’ incursion. This was a wonderfully engaging experience that provided students with an opportunity to solve real world mathematical problems within a fun and positive environment.
During the Year 6 session, we were confronted with unique problems that required exceptional communication skills and mathematical thinking to complete the activities. The problems were on the topics of data, shape, angles, patterns and measurement.
Liam, Eli B and Elisha worked together to complete a complex puzzle involving 2D and 3D shapes. Out of thousands of students across 78 schools, their group broke the existing 2024 record, solving the problem within 7 minutes and 37 seconds! However, this record was soon beaten by James, Eli S and Zachariah, who completed the problem within a whopping 5 minutes! An outstanding achievement from all.
Kayla and Verity enjoyed the ‘Trees’ activity because “…it was the most challenging activity. But it was fun because there was more than one possible answer. We did get angry at one point and yelled because everything seemed to contradict each other!”
Andrea, Lucia and Janelle loved the ‘Post Box’ activity. They said it was their favourite because “…we had to use the process of elimination to get the right answer, leaving us in suspense!”
Well, it’s official! Rehoboth have multiple Mathematicians on their hands! Well done to all our Year 3 to 6 students who put their thinking to the test and worked with their peers to complete each challenge.
