Bonding Together at Point Walter – Year 9 Camp

The main purpose of the camp was to signify embarking upon a journey that Year 9 will take this year, to reflect on childhood, determine what adulthood might look like in the future, and think about some of the challenges and joys to be had ahead.

Early in Term 1, Year 9 students began the Rite Journey program with an overnight camp at Point Walter Recreation Centre. Even though it was a short camp, we managed to pack a lot in. While this was not a camp with the usual adventurous activities, students did hike from Bicton Baths to the beautiful campsite at Point Walter, look over the infamous cliff at Blackwall Reach, walk through the cultural centre of Fremantle and take a tour of the Fremantle Prison. Some students enjoyed an impromptu swim at the campsite pool, many singalongs, playing capture the flag, and a chunk of free time to chat with friends, enjoy the stunning surroundings, play volleyball, basketball and kick the footy.

The main purpose of the camp was to signify embarking upon a journey that Year 9 will take this year, to reflect on childhood, determine what adulthood might look like in the future, and think about some of the challenges and joys to be had ahead. Year 9 parents also came at one point to join with their students to reminisce about their child’s younger years and growth, and to share a snack from their childhood and pray for them as they start this journey towards adulthood. Seeing parents support their kids in this way was really encouraging and we thank parents for the ways they love and nurture their families as well as partner with Rehoboth.

Students commented in their camp debrief that although it was not the kind of camp they were used to they really enjoyed the slower pace, the opportunity to bond together and get to know each other and teachers better, and that the activities that we did do were interesting and challenging. We’re excited for the next Year 9 camp in Term 4 which will be different again.
