The Annual Chemical Titration Competition, held on 29 September, was a highlight for the school’s budding chemists, bringing together students from both Year 11 and 12 to showcase their laboratory skills.
The competition took place at Curtin University’s chemistry lab. A total of 90 teams and 309 students across the state competed to achieve the most precise titration results. Each team was asked with determining the concentration of an unknown acid or base solution using standard titration techniques.
Titration is a common laboratory method used to determine the concentration of a known reactant in a solution. Participants were evaluated based on their technique, speed, and, most importantly, accuracy. Competitors had to meticulously measure the amount of titrant added from the burette until the endpoint was reached, signalled by a colour change in the solution.
Event Highlights
After an intense 90-minute session filled with precise measurements and swirling flasks, the competition reached an exhilarating conclusion. We are thrilled to announce that Rehoboth Christian College claimed the top spot in the 2024 State-wide Chemistry Analysis (Titration) Competition, securing a 1st place finish among 90 competing teams!
Congratulations to our winning team members: Macayle T, Samuel R, and Samuel W, for their remarkable achievement and mastery of titration techniques.
The success didn’t stop there – out of the five Rehoboth teams that participated, four teams ranked among the top 20 in the entire state:
- 4th Place: Jacinta B and Emerson B
- 8th Place: Marcus M, Nadia H, and Esther W
- 9th Place: Thomas W, Darcy Moloney, and Aaron L
