A Unique Experience in the Courts

From observing real trials to defending our own case, our Year 11 students dived deep into the legal world, gaining invaluable firsthand experience!

Over the past week, our Year 11 Politics and Law students had two incredible opportunities to engage with the legal system firsthand.

Our first visit took us to the Magistrates and Supreme Courts, where we observed real civil and criminal trials in action. Witnessing the adversarial nature of the justice system up close gave us a deeper appreciation for its transparency and complexity. One particular  notable Supreme Court trial made a lasting impression.

For our second visit, we stepped into the courtroom ourselves, competing in the WA Law Society’s Mock Trial competition against Lynwood Senior High School. Mock trials give students a hands-on experience in legal proceedings, with teams taking on the roles of barristers, solicitors, witnesses, and court staff. In our first case, we defended a client in a cosmetic theft matter. Our team performed exceptionally well, presenting a compelling defence with confidence and skill.

This has been an engaging and enjoyable experience, deepening our understanding of the justice system. We look forward to the next two rounds and hope to make it to the finals!
