A Day at St. Andrew’s and the War Memorial

A Day at St. Andrew's and the War Memorial

Day 6 of Canberra – 23 June

Today’s journey began with a visit to the Presbyterian Church of St Andrew in Canberra, where the Year 7 students participated in a traditional family worship service. The serene atmosphere and uplifting service set a reflective and positive tone for the day. After the service, we enjoyed a pleasant morning tea in the church grounds, taking the opportunity to relax and chat in the peaceful surroundings.

Our next stop was the Boundless Playground in Kings Park. The students had a wonderful time exploring the inclusive play area, enjoying the various equipment and activities available. The playground provided a fun and engaging environment, allowing the students to expend some energy and enjoy the outdoors.

In the afternoon, we visited the National Arboretum Canberra. The students enjoyed afternoon tea while taking in the breathtaking views of Canberra from the viewing deck. The self-guided tour allowed us to explore the vast collection of living forests and gardens, offering both education and inspiration about conservation efforts.

The highlight of the day was our visit to the Australian War Memorial. After an orientation session with the education staff, we participated in the ‘We Will Remember Them’ program, which was a deeply moving experience. The students learned about Australia’s military history and paid their respects to the fallen soldiers. We concluded our visit with the Last Post Ceremony, a solemn and poignant tribute that left a lasting impression on everyone. We had two boys lay the wreath at the last post. This can be seen at minute 14 here.

Returning to Sundown Villas, we reflected on the day’s events over dinner, grateful for the meaningful experiences and the opportunity to learn more about Australia’s heritage. Mr Farr led the evening devotions on how we are created in God’s image and in His world. The day ended on a high note with a talent show, which was funny to watch and showcased the diverse talents and creativity of our students.
