Arts Festival 2017

Arts Festival 2017 001

The 2017 Arts Festival was a celebration of our students’ gifts and talents in the areas of Technology and Enterprise, and the Arts.

Opening in the LRC

The week kicked off with musical performances in the new Learning Resource Centre (LRC) from our Year 9 Music and Drama classes, capably compered by Ethan Hunter and Jason Anggadjaja.

International Assembly

Tuesday’s whole school International Assembly focussed on the theme of Psalm 23 and was led by Mr Martens with students from Year 9 and 10 classes. After school it was great to see many of our students involved in a rock painting workshop run by Mrs Bargerbos and Mrs James, where Primary students from Kenwick and Wilson were able to create their own designs on rocks and participate in a treasure hunt.

Music and Drama Showcase

The main event of the Festival was the Music and Drama Showcase held on Wednesday evening. The Showcase presented a varied program of items from our Classroom Music, Instrumental Music Program (IMP) and Drama students. It was great to welcome back to the college our special guest artist Ben Stafford, who played two songs from his recently released EP. Ben is a former Rehoboth student who has gone on to use his musical gifts and talents through music ministry and tutoring. There was also a fantastic supper organised by the Food Technology classes.

Flashmob and Open Mic

On Thursday, Mr Kuipers coordinated all the Kenwick Campus students in a flashmob which involved recreating the words “Soli Deo Gloria” on the oval using their bodies. The highlight of this was an impromptu conga line on the oval. The whole event was captured by a drone manned by Mr de Bruyn, and the video will be premiered in Term 4.

A real Festival highlight finished off the week with a jam-packed Open Mic Session on Friday, accompanied by the street food stalls run by the Year 10 Food Technology class. Students from Years 9-11 performed music and drama items, which was closed off by a special guest performance by Ms Constanza Herrero, our IMP vocal tutor who is currently working on releasing an EP. Our Year 11 Music class also performed an outstanding rendition of the Stevie Wonder song “Isn’t She Lovely” which had us all up and grooving along.

Throughout the Festival week, the Art Exhibition in the Foyer presented a display of the students’ works from Kindy to Year 12. It showcased a wide array of pieces from our Visual Art, Visual Communication, and Design and Technology classes. Many thanks go to Mr Kuipers, Mrs Crittenden, Mrs Bargerbos and Mrs Nieuwkerk for putting together such a fantastic display. Thank you also to all the classroom teachers who so generously put together art works from across the Wilson and Kenwick Campuses.
